P. J. Washington was reported to have signed a four-year, $90 million contract extension with the Mavericks. His agent, Kevin Bradbury of Lift Sports Management, was instrumental in negotiating this unprecedented new deal. It sends another strong signal of Washington’s belief in the team and keeps him under contract in Dallas through the 2029-30 season.
Washington joined the Mavericks at the NBA trade deadline in February 2024. He wasted no time in making his presence felt on the team. In the 2024 playoffs, he came alive, earning a start in all 22 games while contributing 20.3 points, 11.4 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game. His performance specifically has been notable. Defensively, last season he was one of just eight players in the league to average at least one steal and one block per game while appearing in a minimum of 50 games.
In terms of statistical contributions, Washington had a remarkable 14 double-doubles in the 2023-2024 season. This number is a drastic departure from the ten double-doubles he accumulated over the last three seasons combined. Most importantly, it speaks to his growth and new larger role in the Mavericks’ lineup. In the 2024-25 season, Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, further solidifying his position as a valuable asset for the team.
Defensively, Washington made an impact as well, averaging 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals per game in that same season. It’s no accident that his shooting accuracy combined with an underratedly powerful game made him one of the most effective players on the court. He did so while shooting a blistering 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from 3.
Before this extension, Washington had just one year left on his old contract, which carried a $14.1 million cap hit. The new agreement reflects his growth as a player and signals the Mavericks’ confidence in his abilities and potential to contribute to the team’s success in the coming years.
