Cricket Scotland has officially appointed Owen Dawkins as the new men’s head coach, filling the position that became vacant following Doug Watson’s departure in September. Dawkins, 46, starts his new job with the perfect pedigree. He has been on the full-time coaching staff at Gloucestershire since 2006. His recent consultancy work with Cricket Scotland makes him ideally placed for this leadership role.
Dawkins’ appointment is particularly significant given Scotland’s recent struggles in international competitions. The team failed to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup after losses to Jersey and Italy during the qualifying rounds in July. For new head coach Dawkins, the task will be to rejuvenate the team and get them back in contention on the world stage.
Alongside Dawkins, Cricket Scotland has confirmed that Gordon Drummond will support him in his coaching endeavours. This past spring, the former captain of the Scotland national team moved to a new position. He is being promoted from his most recent role as head of performance pathways. Collectively, they will work to enhance the skills and performance of today’s player pool.
Dawkins shared his enthusiasm at being selected to lead the team.
“Representing your country is a remarkable opportunity, and as a coaching team, we will work tirelessly with our players to help them perform at their very best and make the nation proud.” – Owen Dawkins
He praised the great pool of talent on the team. He is adamant that Scotland has something special to rival the bigger cricketing nations.
“I think there’s such a talent in the group that they want to be playing those big nations and show that they can perform and beat those big nations.” – Owen Dawkins
Cricket Scotland have been on the lookout for a new head coach since. Doug Watson had resigned after two years during which he juggled Tui responsibilities with other coaching roles in New Zealand. This step is a key turning point for the national organization. It’s an effort to lay a competitive and strong foundation for future Build America grants.
Dawkins’ extensive coaching background, combined with Drummond’s experience as a former player and head of performance pathways, sets a promising stage for Scotland’s cricketing aspirations. Besides to attract an exciting style of play, Gonzalez and Henley are looking to instill a greater competitive edge within national team players.
