Otis Williams Gears Up for Halftime Show as The Temptations Return to Detroit

Otis Williams, the last original member of The Temptations, looking to light up Ford Field. He’ll be opening the stage at the premiere of a much-awaited U.S. Super Bowl halftime production. The live performance will take place during the halftime show on Thursday Night Football when the Detroit Lions play host to the Dallas Cowboys. Williams welcomes fans to “Get Ready” for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This annual two-day event is an homage to both the iconic rap trio and the adored local soccer franchise.

Williams, who is a Detroiter at heart, said he was looking forward to the upcoming performance. He’s been a longtime, hardcore fan of the Detroit Lions. Back then, he never would have imagined that they were on the verge of scoring big wins on the field as well! “Oh, wonderful. I’m a Detroiter at heart… but I love Detroit and I’ve always been with the Lions and I’m so glad to see and hear that they’re winning,” he said.

Originally conceived in the 1960s gave birth to dazzling audiences around the world with their live performances. Now, they’ll take the field for that first halftime show in Detroit, a momentous occasion that brings Williams great pride. “Well, it means quite a bit. We’ve been wearing white for quite some time… that’s a special privilege now to do it before the Lions,” he stated. The renowned ensemble is known worldwide for their trademark all-white uniforms. They intend to wear it into the performance, thus strengthening their ties to the community.

Looking back on his time in the music industry, Williams was jubilant. He remembered producing “The Temptations”—a movie that planted a sharp stake in the ground on the Tempts’ five-decade story. At first, Robinson was disappointed that actor Leon Robinson would not be portraying him in the film. We were so happy with how his character came out! Williams shared a memorable anecdote about a famous line from the film: “Well, I talked with the brother that played me [Charles Malik Whitfield]. I said, ‘Hey, man, who wrote that line?’ He said it was just a happenstance.”

This line—“Ain’t nobody coming to see you, Otis”—has since become iconic among fans and serves as a reminder of the film’s lasting impact. “Now when I’m on stage, I have a lot of people saying, ‘We came to see you, Otis,’ and it’s been like a noted thing to say,” Williams noted.

As the ensemble gets ready to hit the stage for their historic performance, they want to ensure they put on a powerful experience worthy of their legend. As Williams pointed out, otherwise, we’ll just be the same old folks we’ve always been. Look for us to continue to stay true to our storied legacy. The Temptations still want to do more than entertain, they want to inspire younger generations through their music.

Williams adds that he’s very proud to be a father, too, reporting that he has one son, Ethan. This personal connection drives his passion for performance and aligns with his mission to inspire positive change through music to his audience.

In addition to his musical achievements, Williams expressed surprise at learning that Marvin Gaye had once tried out for the Detroit Lions in the 1970s. For instance, “I was shocked that Marvin Gaye auditioned for the Lions,” he confessed. It’s great of them to have made a big fuss of his absence! He talked about Gaye’s impact on the music and sports worlds.

The buzz around Thursday Night Football is astounding. Williams’ family members are still clamoring for tickets to see The Temptations live on stage. As they prepare for their show at Ford Field, Williams assures everyone that they are committed to putting on a stellar performance: “We’re going to make sure our game is tight.
