Manager Martin O’Neill scored a glorious homecoming victory. He immediately had a positive impact, leading the team to an uplifting 4-0 home win against Falkirk in his first match in interim charge. The win comes as a relief after the unexpected Brendan Rodgers’ departure. For his part, O’Neill, deeply molded by both O’Connor and Shaun Maloney, now finds himself running the club through this crucial transition. One of the club’s major shareholders, Dermot Desmond, was in attendance for the game, seeing with his own eyes the much-improved Celtic team.
In the first half, Johnny Kenny emerged as a standout player for Celtic, scoring two goals that significantly contributed to the team’s dominant display. He took advantage with a follow-up shot, the first points of the game for Celtic. This early strike set them in the driver’s seat out of the gate. Kenny then added a second with a near-post header to leave Derry leading 2-0 at the break.
A Dominant First Half
It didn’t take long for Celtic to assert their dominance of the match. Kenny’s opening goal really set the tone, his awareness and positioning evident even before he slotted home. His second goal capped it off showing the excellent attacking quality Celtic possessed that night.
Falkirk did have chances, most importantly when Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi had a potential opener saved well by Celtic’s veteran goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel. Falkirk are now unbeaten in their last three Premiership fixtures. It was evident they just couldn’t live with Celtic’s energy and inventiveness in that opening 45.
When I looked up at halftime and the score line was 2-0, O’Neill reflected in a post-game interview. We knew we had so much more to offer. “I’m delighted to have won the game. I don’t think I’ve been as nervous since I did the 11-plus!”
Second Half Surge
Celtic seized total control of the match after the break, their depth and talent evident. Benjamin Nygren scored a stunning long range goal just for good measure, Celtic’s attacking depth on full display after they doubled their lead.
Sebastian Tounekti would go on to pad the scoreline with two more goals of his own. His first goal was huge – as it turned out, it was his debut at Parkhead. The ecstatic home crowd whistled, roared and went wild as they drank in this exhilarating moment. His second, in particular, reflected how his combination play has developed to help put the finishing touches on an emphatic victory for Celtic.
Reflections on the Match
The game ended with Celtic controlling the match from start to finish, controlling possession and chances created. In other words, Falkirk was completely nowhere near scoring. John McGlynn, Falkirk’s manager, lamented the culture shock of facing such a daunting opponent. “It’s not going to define our season, that one,” he stated, reflecting on the challenges ahead.
