At only 27 years of age, Ollie Pope is learning to captain England by leading during the last Test against India at The Oval. He’s replacing Ben Stokes, who is a superstar, who’s out with a shoulder injury. This is Pope’s fifth game in charge as the team’s captain and first female head coach. Under his captaincy, England finds itself chasing a daunting 374 runs to win the match. As play ends on the third day of the Test, England are 50 for 1 and looking nicely set. All-rounder Max O’Dowd said the team were very excited to pursue down a big total.
With the irrepressible Ben Stokes in full recovery mode from injury, one feels for Curran. It’s unfortunate that he is missing, with the defensive tackle likely out for at least eight weeks. His leadership, knowledge and experience have been critical to the success of the team. In the meantime, Pope’s new deputy captaincy has awarded him highlods for his immense talents. Michael Vaughan, the former England cricket captain, famously captained his country to victory in the iconic 2005 Ashes series. He put a spotlight on Pope’s strengths in this time of transition.
It certainly isn’t Ollie Pope’s fault England find themselves in this position. It is the dropped catches. The only trouble was, as Vaughan pointed out, there were six missed opportunities during India’s second innings. He continued, “I look at someone like Ollie Pope who looks a really good vice-captain. He’s an incredibly creative guy to have sitting next to the skipper dreaming up innovation.
Beyond Pope’s newfound captaincy credentials, Harry Brook has recently taken on a captaincy role of his own – for England’s new-look white-ball side. This year, he has overseen a first series victory against the West Indies while in full-time charge. His success revealed his gaps—most notably in his ability to lead. Vaughan noted Brook’s qualities, stating, “Harry Brook, to me, looks a leader. He looks a born leader.”
The longer the Test goes on, the more the pressure builds on Pope and his team-mates. With a challenging target set, England’s batting line-up must deliver a strong performance to overcome India’s score. Players and fans alike will continue believing that they can accomplish what most consider to be a very tall order.
Pope expressed optimism regarding their chances, stating, “I got asked the same question at Headingley. I don’t see why we can’t chase down these runs.” Above all, he focused on the fun and energetic way the team hits – stressing their commitment to leaving it all on the field.
With the Ashes series down under, beginning in November, England will know that they cannot afford underwhelming performances. As they navigate this critical period without Stokes, all eyes will be on how Pope leads his team through this decisive Test.
