Ollie Pope returned to form in style as well. He hit his first County Championship century for more than two years in Surrey’s match with Sussex. The young batsman underlined his growing reputation as a potential long-term linchpin for Surrey with a magnificent innings of 103. His remarkable showing made the team heavy favorites heading into day three of the championship.
Pope’s ton, his 22nd overall in first-class cricket, returned following a near three-year wait for a red-ball ton in the Championship. He showcased his skills throughout the innings, hitting 11 boundaries and sixes, with five of those soaring into the leg side. His propensity to spot gaps and rotate the strike was key to creating offensive momentum for his squad.
As he neared his century, Pope’s shot selection was incredible. One of his most eye-catching moments came when he nonchalantly launched a delivery from James Coles into mid-wicket orbit. This shot set the stage for just how confident and precise he was throughout. He played a sumptuous straight drive off Coles that most spectators – and even some players – considered the shot of his innings.
The Pope’s century was a huge individual accomplishment. It gave invaluable assistance to his partner, Ben Foakes, as he defended at the opposite end. The pair established a dangerous partnership, taking Surrey to a powerful position of 390-3 at close of play. Their ability to work together produced an excellent 179-run partnership with Dom Sibley. This commendable resilience offered Surrey the ideal platform for their chase.
Despite his notable performance, Pope’s innings came to an abrupt end when he edged a short ball from Sussex’s Jayden Seales just two deliveries after reaching his century. Seales proved to be the pick of the Sussex bowlers, showcasing tremendous heart and quality with ball in hand. Pope’s contributions had already set the tone for the day, and his dismissal did little to hinder Surrey’s progress.
