The Oklahoma City Thunder has made a huge investment by extending the contract of center/forward Jaylin Williams. The 23-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., is expected to sign a three-year deal worth $24 million. His stamp of approval on the addition solidifies his place on the Thunder’s roster long-term. Williams proved his worth throughout the most recent postseason. This trade solidifies the club’s depth even as they continue to look ahead to 2024 and beyond in getting their younger players more developed.
Jaylin Williams, a forward from Arkansas, was taken by the Thunder in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. He had some bad luck at the start of the season with a hamstring strain that really stuck with him. After missing the first two months, he made a triumphant return to the team in late December. Averaging 5.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in his final collegiate season, Williams’ versatility would add a new dimension to the Wizards’ frontcourt. He’s able to shoot just under 40% from deep displaying his strong offensive abilities. This unique talent is what has made him such a coveted player for the Thunder.
During last season’s playoffs, Williams was giving big-play production. He was instrumental in helping the Thunder overcome the Denver Nuggets in the second round. The team had to rely on him as their only established frontcourt player until the return of Chet Holmgren in mid-February. Williams did more than just score – he was the key to their rebounding and defense too. His postseason performance, though, was a testament to his growth as both a player and an adaptable depth piece that the Thunder desperately needed.
Williams has averaged 5.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game over his career. That level of progress is a clear demonstration of the work he’s put in since entering the league. His potential to make an impact even in short stints has made him the darling of both the fan and analyst voting. The Thunder’s belief in giving him the long-term deal is indicative of their desire to continue developing youth and establishing a competitive roster energetic with potential.
