Obi Toppin to Undergo Foot Surgery, Out Until February

Obi Toppin, the former No. 32 overall pick and current Pacers’ forward, will undergo surgery next week. The procedure will repair a partial stress fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. The Pacers confirmed the surgery on Friday. That means they ruled Toppin out for a minimum of three months of playing time.

Toppin’s injury was the result of a fall during last Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He only had about 17 minutes of action in him before he was forced out due to pain. The Pacers didn’t announce the specific date for Toppin’s surgery, but it will happen within the next few days.

For the young season, Toppin has been impressive, averaging 14 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Unfortunately this injury will prevent him from seeing the floor for quite some time, leaving an enormous hole in the middle of the Pacers’ lineup.

The Indiana Pacers are already dealing with serious injury concerns with other key players. Their star Tyrese Haliburton, an all-star and young star, is probably done for the season with a torn Achilles. At the same time, T.J. McConnell will miss at least the first month of play with a left hamstring strain. In addition to Miller, Johnny Furphy (illness) and Kam Jones (illness) are appearing on the Nuggets’ injury report.

Rick Carlisle, head coach of the Pacers, commented on Toppin’s situation, stating:

“Probably not recommend talking about this again until probably February 1 in three months.” – Rick Carlisle

Toppin’s absence will undoubtedly test the depth of the Pacers’ roster as they navigate through this challenging stretch. What the team will need is for other players to step up in his absence, both while they wait and until he is healthy.
