Nottinghamshire produced a ruthless display to take control of their County Championship clash with rigid Warwickshire on the second day in Edgbaston. Captain Hasan Hameed and his forces had crushed all opposition. They finished the first day with a very healthy lead of 111 runs and with five wickets still left in hand.
Hameed was instrumental in his side’s fightback to Warwickshire’s first innings, registering a match-saving 75* in reply. His focus never flinched in the whole innings, showing himself to be the proper captain at that moment. They combined to produce an all-rounder’s performance that cemented Nottinghamshire’s place at the summit. By the end of play, they had increased their lead to 204-5.
Hameed joined forces with Ben Slater to form a deepening alliance. They took them from 50 runs in 67 balls to 81 runs in 87 balls. However, Slater’s innings ended in unfortunate circumstances just before the tea interval when he was given lbw to bowler Bamber. Even with this disappointment, Hameed’s grit and determination would go on to see Nottinghamshire still extremely well-placed in the match.
On the bowling side, Brett Hutton was phenomenal in his ability to put pressure on the batter. He took a very impressive 5-38. With his match-winning display, he tore through Warwickshire’s celebrated batting order, bowling them out for just 93 in their first innings. Hutton’s relentless pressure, combined with top-drawer seam bowling from Fergus O’Neill, proved too much for Warwickshire’s batsmen.
While the home side labored to build momentum throughout their innings. Hutton took his chance, finding the gap between Shaikh’s bat and pad to take his wicket. The batting collapse was severe, as Nottinghamshire’s bowlers executed their plans effectively, causing five wickets to fall for just 31 runs in 13.5 overs.
By close Nottinghamshire were in almost total command of the match. At lunch they enjoyed a pretty hefty 158 run lead on ninth placed Warwickshire. The victors will undoubtedly seek to build on this most favorable state of the union as they roll into tomorrow’s action.
