Nottinghamshire produced a superb all-round display to beat Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl. They provided a fine foundation for the big score of 241 for 5 set on the first day of their Rothesay County Championship Division One fixture. Jack Haynes and Freddie McCann provided the fireworks, each making significant contributions to a historic team score of 260.
Jack Haynes scored an understated 70 runs, playing a calm innings and showing the right temperament at the crease. He was well supported by Freddie McCann who scored a valuable 79 runs. Their collaboration was a key component in creating what became a highly competitive score. This became even more vital when they lost their captain, Haseeb Hameed, who was well taken by James Fuller after an edged pull.
Beyond Haynes and McCann, though, Joe Clarke helped the cause with a fine 42. But for the in-form Ben Slater, it proved a difficult start as he was dismissed for only 2 runs. That platform, courtesy of brilliant knocks from the entire batting lineup, left Notts in a commanding position going into the start of Hampshire’s innings.
Nottinghamshire’s Jake bowled excellently, taking 2 for 57. Abbott led with an amazing 2/44. Their work on the glass importantly closed down the chance for second chance points. The visitors still weren’t off the crease by the end of play. As things stand, Nottinghamshire find themselves in last place in the championship standings, with Hampshire having received 1 point for this match.
