Nottinghamshire moved up to second by taking a crucial 12 points from the drawn game with bottom-side Yorkshire. This outcome leaves them unshakeably at the rave top of the County Championship table. With that being said, after playing eight of their 14 planned matches, Nottinghamshire finds themselves in a commanding position. This represents the net nine-point improvement from their appalling performance last year. The final game that finished without either side winning a clear victory featured eye-catching individual displays from both teams.
Nottinghamshire were the clear winners of the battle, amassing 487 runs in their opening innings. Next they scored a healthy 148-1 to call their 2nd innings. Ben Slater was the biggest contributor as he belted an unbeaten 74. Meanwhile, consonant king Haseeb Hameed scored 38 runs to add to the team’s total. This declaration left Yorkshire, who had in their first innings scored 510 runs, a daunting target.
Yorkshire’s showpiece innings was marked by a sensational 224 from Ben Bean. His superb innings was supported by Harry Revis who scored 93 not out. Despite this daunting total, Nottinghamshire’s bowlers performed with remarkable consistency during the match. Freddie McCann turned into the star performer in the tournament finale. He picked up three for 53, getting rid of George Hill and Jack White, while even stumping Dom Bess on debut. On the other hand, Farhan Ahmed, playing his 13th match, bowled a marathon 50 overs to end with figures of 1-126. Matt Patterson-White was instrumental with the ball, picking up three wickets for 146 in a devastating bowling attack.
In response to the drawn match and their current standing, Nottinghamshire’s Freddie McCann expressed confidence in his team’s performance this season.
“We’re happy to be top of the table. We’re playing brilliant cricket as a team. We were hoping for top four this season after not having such a good year last year, but the season we are having at the moment, and the position we are in, we want to win it and we’re confident we can do that.” – Nottinghamshire’s Freddie McCann
Nottinghamshire may have been happy with their lot, but the game was booed for its lack of excitement. Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath commented on the quality of play during the match, particularly concerning the Kookaburra ball used for this fixture.
“The match as a whole was not a great watch for spectators with the Kookaburra ball and I’m still not sure why we are using it, to be honest.” – Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath
With the summer now in full swing, Nottinghamshire will be looking to continue making waves. Yorkshire’s eye is on regrouping after having settled for this draw. That would be a shame, with only six matches remaining in the County Championship. Each point gained will be precious as each team fights to finish among the top teams in the league standings.
