Nottinghamshire’s decision to bat first proved an incredibly wise move as the fixture got under way. They took full advantage of this decision, going into lunch on a daunting score of 90 without the loss of any wickets. This very promising beginning was an indicator of the day’s tone, demonstrating the batting depth and team resilience that had become a staple of this squad. After the break, the momentum changed, as Yorkshire’s bowlers began to clamp a stranglehold on the game.

Notts posted 253/5 with Haseeb Hameed again looking very good on his way to 76 runs. Jack Haynes went lbw, courtesy of Yorkshire’s top wicket-taker, who celebrated his 33rd top success of the summer. It was a big moment too, as Yorkshire had found it difficult to make breakthroughs in the opening session. Nottinghamshire soon lost a second wicket. When Lyndon James was held at extra cover, it heaped further pressure on the innings.

Nottinghamshire had their share of chances too, with day three ending in disappointment for the hosts as they posted an impressive 298 for 6. Yorkshire’s attack was ruthless and ruthless…enjoyed controlling match. Led by George Hill and Dan Moriarty, who both took two wickets, they really pulled out Nottinghamshire at crucial points. Their persistence was not rewarded until after lunch when they finally started to see success with their aggressive bowling changes. Yorkshire had a tougher time this season than ever with their hard wickets. Their failure to be able to play Pakistan batter Abdullah Shafique has compounded their options.

Yorkshire are having a tough time of it this season, currently positioned at the foot of Division One. Despite having a host of conquerors on their roster, they only executed victories in seven games. Whether that was nerves, overconfidence, distractibility or a combination, they’ll need to do better if they want to reverse their luck going into this match.

Like Duckett, Joe Clarke was hitting a rich vein of form in the closing stages of Notts’ recent red-ball campaign. His addition to the lineup gives that much more depth and experience. These are essential qualities, though, as the team looks to establish a solid lead score.
