Nottinghamshire flexed their muscle in their most recent Division One fixture, bowling out Yorkshire for 228 runs. Joe Clarke excelled on the pitch, beating 64 runs on 151 balls. In response, Ben Slater weighed in with a patient 52 off 111 balls to steady the boat. These contributions were instrumental in setting a challenging total for Nottinghamshire, who sit top of the Division One table as it stands.
Although Nottinghamshire lost several early wickets in the final against Yorkshire at Headingley, their order dug in and held out till the end. Clarke and Slater remained partners during an important time in the innings, putting on 71 runs together. His measured stand served to repair both early damage and stabilize the innings, leaving Nottinghamshire with a platform on which to build a competitive total.
Yorkshire’s attack were unable to hold back a rampaging Notts unit, though Hill produced one of his finest performances in a White Rose shirt. He had match figures of five for 40, taking the wickets of both Jack Haynes and Kyle Verreynne. His incredible form has shot him up to 32 wickets on the season. It is a tremendous achievement that underlines why he has been a key player for Yorkshire.
In reply Yorkshire made the worst possible start to their innings, slumping to 10 runs for 2 wickets. Mohammad Abbas contributed significantly to Nottinghamshire’s bowling success with figures of 2-5, further complicating Yorkshire’s chase. As each inning passed, Yorkshire’s batting order was unable to build any sort of rhythm, getting shut down by a relentless attack from Nottinghamshire.
Thompson had a hand in demolishing Yorkshire’s batting order, grabbing three for 77. His cause was only made stronger by the fantastic performance of Hill. Jointly, they upped the ante on Yorkshire, who now occupy the second-bottom spot in Division One.
The game plays out and ultimately it’s Nottinghamshire who asserts control. Rather, they are making a strong case to show their superiority at the very top of the table. Yorkshire are already fighting a lost cause to come back from where they’re at right now. They want to move up the league table desperately.
