Nottingham Forest achieved a much-needed victory over Leeds United, marking their first Premier League win since the opening day of the season. The match, played at the City Ground, saw Morgan Gibbs-White score a decisive header in the 68th minute, followed by a penalty converted by Elliot Anderson in the 91st minute. This victory snapped a nine-game winless streak for Forest. Beyond the rare accomplishment, it moved them a step closer to safety in the league standings.
The game developed into a back-and-forth chess match as each team tried to find their advantage. Nottingham Forest’s manager, Sean Dyche, instead made only two changes to tip the team. His focus was on getting them to respond positively after their last outing against Manchester United. Leeds United, led by manager Daniel Farke, were in a desperate situation. A week of practice and second chances hoped to help them rebound from the recent stretch of bad play.
Nottingham Forest’s Key Players Shine
Morgan Gibbs-White, having taken a slight knock the week before, was magical in the match. He found the net first with an accurate header from eight yards out that crashed into the far side netting. His performance was a window into the new and exciting impact he’s having on the pitch. Dyche acknowledged that this presence might be “infectious,” improving the squad’s morale and character.
“Getting himself back to the basics of what he does, that energy, I call it infectious – the on-pitch presence and being infectious around the group and then going and relaxing and scoring goals.” – Daniel Farke
Elliot Anderson’s penalty in stoppage time sealed the victory and validated his confidence. That late strike ensured all three points went home with Forest. It also highlighted their prodigious ability to capitalize on crucial match opportunities, which couldn’t be more opposite than what they’ve done earlier this season.
Leeds United Struggles Continue
Leeds struggled throughout the match, especially with their leaking of goal scoring opportunities and defensive distractions. Goalkeeper woes Leeds have saved just one of their past 33 Premier League penalties conceded. Jack Harrison’s foul that led to Forest’s penalty was a perfect example of the defensive frailty that has haunted Farke’s team all season long.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, seen here against Aston Villa, was expected to be Leeds’ main threat, but missed multiple gilt-edged chances to find the net. His lack of finishing ability should worry Alvaro Recoba fans everywhere. He hasn’t found the net more than two times in his last 32 matches in all competitions. This lack of finishing has contributed to Leeds’ disappointing run, where they have lost four of their last five matches against teams with nine or more matches without a win.
Implications for Both Teams
Nottingham Forest’s important victory comes with huge relegation battle ramifications. They are only one point off of being safe from relegation on the Premier League table. After an arduous start to the season, this win could be a turning point for Dyche’s squad as they seek to build momentum moving forward.
Leeds United is still very much in the proverbial danger zone. It was the first time this season they had lost a league game in which they scored the opening goal. With just three wins in their last 25 away matches, Farke’s side must urgently address their form to avoid slipping further into relegation trouble.
“He did well to get in it [the England squad]. People forget that. People say, ‘Oh well, he must be really disappointed’, but he got in it. So it doesn’t mean he can’t get in it again.” – Sean Dyche
