The Northern Superchargers triumphed in the 2023 women’s showpiece, securing their first title in franchise history at Lord’s on Saturday. The Hurricanes pulled off victory courtesy of an explosive bowling effort. Completing the bowling was Annabel Sutherland and Kate Cross, both taking important wickets and instrumental in the narrowing of the game.
The Superchargers provided a supercharged showstopper of an opening performance with their bowling antics. Both Sutherland and Cross had stellar outings, ending with identical 2-23 figures. Cross showed his quality and made an instant impact upon joining the powerplay, taking two wickets in two balls. Maxwell easily cut short Maia Bouchier’s overnight international debut. Laura Wolvaardt became the first Icc T20 World Cup casualty of a swinging delivery that turned substantially to clip the leg stump.
The Southern Brave’s chase got off to a very good start, with Davina Perrin looking in great touch early on. She was unable to repeat her QF feat from The Oval and eventually perished after scoring 17 runs. Freya Kemp was the leading scorer of the Brave, making 26 runs off 17 deliveries. Batting prodigy Phoebe Litchfield lived up to the hype, announcing her arrival with three fours and a six in her first four balls. She was bowled soon after, having made 26 runs from 13 balls.
Despite the Brave’s early momentum, the Northern Superchargers’ bowlers contained their opponents effectively. Annabel Sutherland’s performance remained crucial as she claimed two wickets, adding to the pressure on the Brave’s batting lineup.
After their powerful victory, Nicola Carey commented on her surprise and embarrassment at receiving the ‘Match Hero’ award. She focused on the great performance of her teammates, saying, “I just thought our girls all bowled really well. This sentiment was emblematic of the grassroots, strategic and deeply coordinated effort that propelled them to their historic victory.
As that match was nearing its end, it was Sutherland who gave the Superchargers the win in dramatic fashion. Her incendiary blow that clubbed a super into the crowd won their maiden title in 2018, ushering in a new epoch for the franchise.
After the match, Southern Brave captain Georgia Adams assessed her team’s campaign. She stated, “Any loss in a final is a tough one to take. We have had a brilliant campaign so can take a lot of pride and confidence.” This exemplifies the mutual respect and sportsmanship on display, even in defeat.
Kate Cross shared her emotions after the match, capturing the excitement of the moment: “It doesn’t feel very real, I’ve already lost my voice!” Her response speaks to more than just her individual success but rather the sheer elation of helping deliver a win for the Superchargers.
