Northamptonshire then went on to claim a comprehensive victory by six wickets at Middlesex. They hunted down a mammoth target of 311 runs with ten overs to spare! It was a fabulous game at the County Ground, featuring brilliant individual displays from Luke Procter and James Sales. Their centuries inspired the team to a memorable four-wicket victory.
Middlesex had set a daunting task after making 413 and 332 for eight declared in their two innings. Northamptonshire, though, stepped up to the plate, closing their response with 313 for six declared in their second innings. Things did not get any easier—they had to make 4.2 runs per over for a minimum of 73 overs to win.
Luke Procter broke through during the chase with an unbeaten century to seal the victory. He was helped by a large slice of luck during the game. He was given a bit of good luck here and there with dropped catches at key times. Those blunders occurred when he was at 12, 27, and 88 runs. Though these were blows again for the Middlesex side, Procter took full advantage of his chances and held the innings together brilliantly.
James Sales was equally brilliant, matching Procter’s accomplishments with an outstanding century of his own. He showed great foot movement against the spin and mixed his shots beautifully to get the runs flowing. Sales drove Gohar through the covers and executed a sharp cut shot behind square off the same bowler, showcasing his agility and skill. He pulled Hollman away through midwicket, edging another shot punchily into the cover fielders’ ring, sharp enough to create a gap.
As the innings progressed, Tim Robinson contributed significantly, hitting a full toss from Robson over extra cover for a commanding boundary. Sales continued to amaze by steering Roland-Jones to third man. They applied discipline to Middlesex’s bowlers and helped their charges go about keeping Northamptonshire ahead of the rate that was required.
This partnership between Procter and Sales would be key. Northamptonshire proved too very good at rotating the strike and keeping that momentum going. It was this unique skill that allowed him to keep them ahead in the pursuit, despite ever–increasing pressure. When they neared the intended target, anticipation mounted. Their collaborative magic had set up an exciting stage for a dramatic photo finish to an incredible day.
