Northamptonshire are set to spoil Lancashire’s party by claiming their first County Championship win at Old Trafford since 1999. To do so would be a quite incredible achievement, their fourth-ever win at Lancashire’s historic headquarters. The continued confidence the team showed in this match has the fanbase and players alike awash with optimism heading into Washington. Each of them is looking to land a major victory this Monday!
Northamptonshire put in a top-class showing, bowling out Lancashire for just 228 in their first innings. This massive show of force resulted in the enforcement of the follow-on. Harrison was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets. While Justin Broad did his bit to counter England’s surge, claiming three excellent scalps. Zaib was the pick of the bowlers as he trapped George Balderson lbw for one. He ended up with a phenomenal performance of 5 for 9 runs in 9.5 overs.
It was bouncing back Lancashire had certainly found signs of resilience in their second innings, with an improved team performance. Northamptonshire are still very much in the box seat and the strong favourites to get across the line for a result. After just eight overs Weatherall broke through the defences of Lancashire’s first wicket on what would soon prove to be a very difficult day for the home side’s batsmen. Matty Hurst departed soon after, misjudging a wide delivery and guiding an awful shot on the full to Ricardo Vasconcelos at gully for 16.
Lancashire’s top order was under extreme duress as they tried to dig in and respond to the early crisis. The seasoned Bohannon took 146 balls to reach his half-century, while Jennings appeared imperious, steadily accumulating runs until he reached 96. His innings came to an abrupt end when Zaib took a tremendous diving catch at midwicket. This play not only ended the incoming offensive threat but cemented Northamptonshire’s hold on the match.
As the game heads into its final straight, Northamptonshire players and supporters alike are hopeful of getting across the line with this essential milestone. A home victory would finally break Town’s 77-year-long hoodoo at Old Trafford. Most importantly though, it would reflect the team’s collective effort and desire to succeed this season.
