As the NFL trade deadline approaches, clubs are making their final moves to shore up spots of deficiency and refine their rosters. As major projects and changes began to take form, key players such as Alvin Kamara, Taylor Rapp, and Sean Rhyan become the talk of the potential trade block. With the deadline set for November 1, 2023, teams are weighing their options and determining who could be valuable assets in their playoff pursuits.
Alvin Kamara, now 30 years old, has had a hard time this year, posting -84 rush yards over expectation. His lack of productivity has led to doubts about whether he will remain with the New Orleans Saints’ franchise in the future. On the upside, the Buffalo Bills are taking a hard look at their roster. They currently sit dead last in run defense DVOA which could encourage them to be active ahead of the deadline.
Kamara’s Decline and Future
The former star Alvin Kamara has seen his play reduce considerably this year. And despite all his prior awards, he’s posted an eye-popping minus-84 rush yards over expectation. This stat further highlights his struggles on the field and is somewhat alarming looking ahead to his contributions.
At 30 years old, Kamara’s age plays a prominent role in discussions around his potential trade as well. Teams may hesitate to invest in a player who has shown signs of decline, especially as they consider younger options in the league. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Saints should make an easy call. Will they trade Kamara, or will they keep him, banking on his situation turning around?

Struggles in Buffalo
The Buffalo Bills have had their fair share of new challenges this season, none more glaring than their newfound vulnerability in stopping the run. Sitting dead last in run-defense DVOA, the Bills have the most incentive to change and need to find a way to do so. One potential target then would be Taylor Rapp, who has had a rough go of it all season long. Because his impact on the field has been well below expectations, he has emerged as one of the players most mentioned in trade speculation.
The Bills are hoping to turn their defense around. 34-year-old veteran safety Jordan Poyer is another player who could be featured in trade discussions. The urgency for improvement is palpable, as the team aims to solidify its standing amid fierce competition in the league.
Sean Rhyan’s Position in Play
Sean Rhyan, a two-plus-year veteran and third-round pick in 2022, is handling a tightrope walk with the Bills. Rhyan got his start on a defense anchored by the likes of Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo. Today, he’s a backup behind Harold Landry III and K’Lavon Chaisson. His 180-degree turn from starter to backup leaves much in doubt about his continued presence with the team.
Rhyan has openly addressed his situation, stating, “If you just look at what we got on the line, I probably won’t be back here.” This admission highlights his awareness of the competitive nature of professional football and the impact of performance on career longevity.
Rhyan is about to begin the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. Contenders in need of proven depth are going to find him as enticing an available veteran as there is. For franchises in need of some extra help on the offensive line, his experience and versatility should turn out to be valuable.
Nailor‘s Limited Experience but Impressive Production
Another player worth watching is Nailor, who has not played more than 775 regular-season coverage snaps in a season. Given his lack of experience, we’re certainly not overlooking the play he’s made on just 0.9 yards per coverage snap over that time. While he has only one sack this season, he has recorded eight quarterback hurries, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
As teams assess their needs ahead of the trade deadline, Nailor’s performance could make him an intriguing candidate for acquisition. His upside plus his existing output makes him an attractive option for teams in need of improving their defense.
The Colts’ Need for More Players
The Indianapolis Colts are in a worse predicament as they draw closer to the trade deadline. Their roster is in tatters, and their need for additional players is acute. Continuing to add talent will improve their chances of success this season. The Latin American exemplar’s lack of competitive success has led to speculation about real potential movable excesses to recompense zones of deep wish with larger ammunition.
As franchises across the league prepare for the upcoming trade deadline, many will closely monitor player performances and assess their own needs. The decisions these teams make over the next few days will go a long way towards changing their fortunes and improving their chances to compete for a postseason run.
