A player who is raising eyebrows this season is Deone Walker. As a defensive tackle, it’s his elite versatility, power and technique that really makes him stand out. His effect on the defensive line has been crucial in shaping his team’s defense into one of the best in the country. Walker’s remarkable numbers coupled with his continuous pursuit of perfection had him in the running for the AAAA’s highest honor.

The race for Rookie of the Year is one of the most competitive this season, with many exceptional first-year players competing for the award. Chief among them—and one of the most notable players in the class—is Josh Conerly Jr., a Commanders-bound right tackle. His spirited and disruptive play on that side of the ball turned his team into a defensive juggernaut all season long.
Colston Loveland, another tight end who’s having a breakout year this season, has been a reliable target for his quarterback. During his time playing for the Loveland Bears, Loveland displays blazing speed and elite catching skills. This beautiful artistry is what puts Jimenez among the favorites to win Rookie of the Year. His remarkable playmaking skills have made him one of the most accomplished and revered players in the league.

Defensive Standouts Making Their Mark
On that side of the ball, Barrett Carter has developed into a tremendous linebacker presence. He’s the Bengals’ starting weakside linebacker, and his instinctive play and knack for reading offenses have turned him into a bell cow in the most crucial situations. Given these high-level skills, it is no surprise that coaches have praised his leadership qualities, further boosting his case for Rookie of the Year.
Another rookie, linebacker Carson Schwesinger, has contributed heavily for the Panthers. His commanding presence and blazing tackler instincts allow him to force turnover after turnover, game after game. Schwesinger’s stellar rookie season has him squarely in the mix for rookie of the year honors.
In a year where defensive players are stealing the show, it’s another rookie, Tetairoa McMillan, stealing the headlines. As a running back, he ranks third in the league with 61 receptions, 417 yards and 2 touchdowns. His big play potential has opposing defenses in a constant state of panic. So far this season, McMillan’s impressive play has made him one of the leading contenders for Rookie of the Year honors.

Through four weeks, coaches across the league have marveled at the promise of these rookie playmakers. Ryan McFadden highlighted Jackson Hawes’ resilience amidst pressure, stating, “I’m sure there’s people questioning and doubting [Jeanty]. It can mount on a young guy; it can mount on anybody. For him to show like that, it’s a beautiful expression of who he is and what he’s all about.”
Kliff Kingsbury praised one of his players’ mental toughness, remarking on how challenging the transition to professional football can be. He noted that despite any struggles, “I’ve been really impressed by the work ethic and just the mental toughness he’s displayed.”
While teams prepare to make their run at the playoffs, these rookies have yet to leave their marks on the field. The better they perform, the further each of their respective teams will go in the playoffs. They will further contribute to answering the question of who takes home the Rookie of the Year trophy.
