The NFL offseason isn’t that far away. Now, teams are poised to make some very important decisions that will dictate the direction of their rosters heading into 2022. Among them catching eyes are Connor McGovern and David Edwards, both soon-to-be free agents. The Buffalo Bills have fielded the same starting offensive line over the course of two consecutive seasons. Other teams are really concentrating on their needs and possible upgrades. From the Carolina Panthers’ new signing to the Cleveland Browns’ free-agent linemen, various developments are set to impact numerous franchises.
Connor McGovern and David Edwards Shine as Free Agents
Connor McGovern, a center known for his tenacity and skill on the field, is a pending free agent who teams will closely watch. Though versatile, his ability to anchor the offensive line has made him a hot commodity. The Bills have had a pretty terrific offensive line these last two seasons. Now, they need to determine if they should re-sign McGovern or look elsewhere.
Just as noteworthy, fellow left guard David Edwards, who has played well even while navigating concussion issues, is primed for free agency. His performance on the court this last season has peaked the interest of several teams wanting to strengthen their offensive lines. Both players could play pivotal roles in shaping their next team’s success.
“He plays hard, he’s strong at the point, good pass rusher. When you shop at Nordstrom, you get good stuff,”
- Vic Fangio
In an off-season with more teams than not undergoing drastic roster transformations, the moves made involved these two players could send ripple effects throughout the league.
The Bills’ Offensive Line Dynamics
The Buffalo Bills have had the same starting offensive line for the past two years. This kind of consistency is a rare thing in today’s constantly shifting NFL climate. This continuity has given them an advantage in pass protection and run blocking return. But now, with free agency on the horizon, the question becomes will they continue bringing back this same group or seek out something better.
Brandon Beane, the general manager of the Bills, is understandably peeved. Second, he’s sick and tired of the perpetual speculation on the need for a No. 1 receiver. He stated that he would be “sick of it until the Bills either win the Super Bowl or get that game changer.” This sort of negativity seems out of place, especially given the team’s commitment to constructing a fully functional roster that can compete at the most elite level.
Given these political dynamics, the Bills can ill afford to lose players on the line, such as McGovern. His retention may prove to be most important as they prepare for another playoff run.
Other Notable Moves Around the League
The impacts of this offseason have already made waves with their player movements. Rico Dowdle, who signed a one-year deal with the Panthers recently, is aiming to prove he belongs on the roster. On the other hand, Chuba Hubbard just signed a four-year, $33.2 million deal which shows how valued he is to the Panthers’ future.
Most importantly, Delane has proven to be a defensive force thus far, with jaw-dropping stats. He’s permitted a 60% completion rate while defending four passes on 35 targets. Those contributions should pique the interest of teams hoping to add a solid, low-cost veteran presence to their secondary.
On the opposite side of the ball, Nate Hobbs has had a much tougher go during his rookie season with his new squad. His performance will be key though, as he looks to build on the reps he gets here and land firmly in the rotation going forward.
Secondly, legendary tight end Travis Kelce’s inevitable retirement is hanging over the team, as he closes in on the age of 37. Whether he opts to retire or not, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense will miss his presence in a big way. His absence would severely limit their effectiveness. In the meantime, Noah Gray’s inconsistencies this season have almost cast some doubt on whether he’s ready to step up as Kelce’s successor.
The Browns’ Free Agency Dilemma
The Cleveland Browns are in an interesting predicament with so many of their linemen headed to free agency. NFL Joel Bitonio, Ethan Pocic, and Wyatt Teller eager to move on to bigger and better things. Their departure leaves significant questions at every spot on the line moving forward.
Even with that uncertainty, this Browns staff has been happy with the often-criticized linebacker’s efforts this season. His leadership and great experience would be invaluable as they try to maximize the talent on their dwindling competitive window roster.
As free agency unfolds, how these teams manage their player contracts and acquisitions will ultimately dictate their success in the upcoming season.
