NFL Legend Luis Sharpe Passes Away at 65

Luis Sharpe, an acclaimed former professional football player and advocate for youth recreation, died at 65. As a player, he was a three-time Pro Bowl left tackle for the Arizona Cardinals. Tameka Williams-Sharpe, his widow, broke the tragic news on social media. She spoke powerfully about her profound grief and steadfast love for her husband.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Sharpe spent his formative years in Detroit, where his extraordinary gifts as an athlete first came to the fore. He was the first overall pick of the 1982 NFL Draft. Coming from a terrific college career at UCLA, the Cardinals believed in him enough to take him 16th overall. During his 13 seasons in the NFL, Sharpe spent his entire career with the Cardinals. He played for the franchise when it was based in St. Louis, as well as in Arizona.

Sharpe’s contributions to the team were invaluable. He started all 189 regular-season games in his franchise tenure. His skills on the field earned him recognition as he was selected to the Pro Bowl in three consecutive years: 1987, 1988, and 1989.

Tameka Williams-Sharpe expressed her grief following her husband’s passing, stating, “With deep sorrow and abiding love, I share that my beloved husband, Luis Sharpe, has passed away.” She highlighted the strength and faith that Luis embodied, saying, “His strength, love, and faith were a light to all who knew him. I am grateful for every moment we shared and for the many prayers and kindnesses extended to our family.”

Though coping with such a heavy burden of loss, Tameka was proud and hopeful. She added, “Though my heart is heavy, I trust that Luis is now resting in God’s eternal peace. Please continue to keep our family lifted in prayer.”

Sharpe worked throughout his life and career to ensure his impact on his field would be felt long into the future. His intellect, intellect and dedication inspired all of us who were around him. As his legacy is felt by fans, teammates, and family in touching tributes and cherished memories, we all think of a life indeed well-played.
