In an unprecedented turn of events, the 2024 NFL draft witnessed a record-breaking six quarterbacks selected in the first round, with all of them being chosen within the initial 12 picks. This remarkable occurrence underscores the pressing demand for quarterbacks across the league. The Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants, who held the top three picks, were among those teams possibly eyeing quarterback talent. Meanwhile, organizations like the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints also sought to solidify their quarterback positions.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, and Indianapolis Colts were additionally speculated to address their quarterback needs in this draft. Despite the high number of selections, the quarterback class has been regarded as a downgrade compared to last year’s crop. A veteran scout described it as “muddy,” highlighting a lack of depth and high-caliber talent.
"There's not a lot of depth to it, and there's not a lot of high-talent players either." – A veteran scout
Among the notable prospects in the 2024 draft were Alabama's Jalen Milroe, Georgia's Carson Beck, and Texas' Quinn Ewers. However, Beck's recent elbow injury during the SEC title game and subsequent surgery in December 2023 may have influenced his draft projection.
Looking ahead to future drafts, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and Penn State's Drew Allar are projected to be leading quarterback prospects for 2026.
"I look forward to making more memories with my teammates this year and beyond." – Drew Allar
In the 2025 NFL draft, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward have distinguished themselves from their peers. An ESPN poll revealed Sanders receiving 11 votes while Ward garnered 9 votes, indicating their popularity among experts.
Sanders and Ward bring contrasting styles to the field. Sanders excels as a dropback quarterback, relying on his precision and arm strength, albeit lacking athleticism for designed running plays. In contrast, Ward is a dual-threat quarterback who will likely be utilized for designed runs in the NFL, bringing mobility and versatility to his role.
