The National Football League (NFL) has made it official—its bringing the 2027 draft to our nation’s capital. This year’s incredibly exciting event, which will have a record setting attendance of more than one million attendees. We’re especially excited that the event will be held on the picturesque, and perhaps most famous, National Mall. The beautiful, historic Capitol building will be an incredible backdrop. Today’s announcement is a big step toward that goal. Today, the NFL draft is one of the top entertainment spectacles in all of sports.
At a press conference welcoming Harris as owner of the Washington Commanders, he shared his optimism about future attendance figures. “I think we’re going to have well over a million people,” he said on the day of the announcement. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell echoed this sentiment, stating, “We believe we’ll have well over a million people when we come here.” Their predictions come on the heels of impressive attendance figures from previous drafts, including Detroit’s record of over 750,000 two years ago and Green Bay’s draw of more than 600,000 fans for a recent event.
He joined Goodell, Harris, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser in standing support of the initiative. Trump emphasized the cultural significance of the event. He proclaimed, “The draft is a tribute to one of our great – and most popular – cultural treasures. He stressed that the entire world would be looking on. It’s a reminder of just how popular things like the NFL draft are on a global scale.
The 2027 draft will be three days long, attracting massive throngs of fans. It’s on track to set the highest attendance record ever and raise the NFL’s profile as a cultural touchstone. Goodell echoed this change in tone when he said, “the draft has morphed into one of the great sports entertainment events.” This year’s inaugural first round of the draft drew 13.6 million fans to their televisions and digital devices. What’s more, this incredible number underscores its remarkable bipartisan support.
As you can tell, the excitement about the draft is palpable! At the same time, Washington D.C. just announced plans for a new stadium at the RFK Stadium site and the deal is worth almost $4 billion. This latest advancement continues to position the city as a leader in pushing through new sports infrastructure and successfully bidding on premier events.
