Newcastle United has made significant moves in the transfer market, securing several players while seeing a few key departures. The London club have pulled off a major coup by signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55 million. They piqued the Premier League’s interest by signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, with a total deal worth roughly £30 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons. Our other new signing, Aaron Ramsdale, has signed on loan from Southampton. In the background, Antonio Cordero has joined us on a free transfer from Malaga.
As much as the club has attracted talent, it’s lost some significant talent too. It’s a surprising move as Lloyd Kelly has taken Italian giants Juventus by storm, signing for £20 million. In other news, Callum Wilson on free transfer to West Ham. Relegated full-back Jamal Lewis has been released, and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has departed as he previously joined Burnley for an undisclosed fee. Sean Longstaff completes the big three departures by signing for Leeds United for a fee of more than £12 million.
New Signings Strengthen Newcastle’s Roster
Getting Anthony Elanga on board is probably the best highlight of a scintillating summer for Newcastle. The 21-year-old Hawkes has shown serious potential during his impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest. His £55 million price tag shows how highly the club thinks of him to improve their attacking options.
Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, £34.3m inc. add-ons. Along with the signing of DL Javon Hargrave this move represents a quantum leap in the strengthening of the defensive lineup. The 22-year-old USMNT defender should provide an immediate upgrade to the Magpies’ defense.
Aaron Ramsdale’s loan transfer from Southampton has raised some eyebrows, too. The addition of the goalkeeper brings experience and competition for the starting position, continuing to round out the club’s depth behind the goal.
Antonio Cordero’s free transfer from Malaga provides more flexibility across the squad, especially in midfield. These signings further signal the ambition of Newcastle as they seek to bolster their competitiveness at the top of the Premier League table.
Departures Impact Club Dynamics
Though the new signings have been largely well-received, Newcastle has been a host to numerous players departing from Tyneside. Lloyd Kelly has completed his transfer to Juventus for £20m. This transfer is even more notable as an exit for Newcastle, where he had been a strong defensive asset.
Callum Wilson’s free transfer move to West Ham means that the club will have to reassess their attacking options for the future. He is a huge loss both in terms of experience and goal-scoring ability.
Sean Longstaff’s move to Leeds United for over £12 million suggests a change of direction in Newcastle’s midfield profile. These departures represent the difficulty and the promise of what lies ahead for the club as they enter this new, transitional chapter.
Jacob Ramsey Stays in Focus
Despite all this, the Magpies are still pushing for Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old currently has two years left to run on his existing contract. His deep lying playmaker role last season really turned heads, ranking second only to Kevin De Bruyne for his ability to receive the ball between the lines. His numbers weren’t staggering, just the one goal and five assists in the Prem.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s head coach, values Ramsey highly and expressed his desire to keep the player at Villa Park.
“Jacob Ramsey is a very important player,” – Unai Emery
“He grew up here in the academy and his progression is clearly getting better. His level is increasing a lot. He is a big potential player in Aston Villa, in England. I want to keep him here, 100 per cent.” – Unai Emery
Newcastle are preparing to make a formal bid for Ramsey. It will remain to be seen how things play out, particularly given his importance to Aston Villa’s success.
