Newcastle United’s search for a new striker is proving to be an elusive task. City have long sought to increase their attacking arsenal heading into next season. The club has been through a lot of recent past disappointment. They had a club-record £70 million offer rejected by Eintracht Frankfurt for talented young forward, Hugo Ekitike. As Newcastle United became aware that Liverpool were particularly interested in Ekitike, they moved their attention towards a move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle’s chase for Ekitike has gotten more and more complicated. Initially the club did seem keener on a move, but Liverpool definitely moved fast. They were quick to act once hearing that Newcastle’s Alexander Isak was off the table this window. Ekitike is keen to make a switch to Liverpool. He’s said to have already settled personal terms, but the transfer depends on a successful negotiation between Stoke and West Brom.
Interest in Yoane Wissa
That attention has now turned to Wissa by Newcastle. Nottingham Forest had already seen a £25 million bid for the forward accepted by Brentford, only for the deal to fall through at the last minute. His dream season last year put Wissa onto the radar of many big clubs including Spurs. Their dependency on him has decreased, especially since Mohammed Kudus arrived at the club.
As referenced above, Wissa has shown that he can be a consistent threat in front of goal for Brentford, providing the team with ample attacking power. His ability to find the net in crucial moments makes him an appealing option for Newcastle, who are in search of consistent goal-scoring threats. Should Newcastle manage to land Wissa, it would certainly complicate Manchester United’s plans to make a serious play for Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo, another star performer for Brentford, netted a remarkable 19 in 35 Premier League games last year.
Transfer Market Dynamics
The transfer market dynamics are shifting as clubs more and more develop strategies to make their squads stronger. It’s a reminder of how complicated the current transfer landscape has become for clubs like Newcastle United. During the draft, with nearly every other club looking to fill the same needs, competition can be merciless.
Newcastle’s willingness to go for different routes such as Wissa shows their flexibility and creativity in the transfer market. They continue to invest with an ever-intensifying arms race against the other clubs at the top of the pyramid and their ambitious plans. With the window continuing to close, Newcastle will have to be quick and decisive to land their targets and add attacking options and depth.
