New Zealand Appoints Rob Walter as Head Coach for All Formats

New Zealand Cricket has confirmed Rob Walter as the head coach for all three formats of the game. On Thursday, the announcement highlighted what might be Walter’s deep experience and strategic mind. He is perfectly placed to take the Blackcaps through a vitally important World Cup and Champions Trophy campaign.

Walter, 49, signed a three-year contract that officially begins in mid-June. His tenure will take them through to the next ODI World Cup in 2027. He will be in charge of the next two T20 World Cups, to be hosted in 2026 and 2028. Walter’s appointment comes at an important juncture in the ongoing narrative of New Zealand cricket. The team now look ahead to a busy schedule, with a tour to Zimbabwe on the horizon.

Walter has plenty of white-ball experience behind him, having previously been the South Africa’s coach in the format. He currently applies that know-how to his new role. He most recently piloted South Africa to the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Sadly, his side was narrowly defeated by India by seven runs. Walter was instrumental in South Africa’s run to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup. He helped carry the squad toward qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Walter has kept his residency in New Zealand, despite his performance on the South African team. It’s a further demonstration of his deep devotion to the region and its cricketing community. His profound understanding of New Zealand’s cricket landscape will be incredibly helpful. We can all be thankful that he is prepared to step into this important role.

“The Blackcaps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it’s a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that,” – Rob Walter.

Walter urged attendees to focus on the very promising road ahead. He stated, “It’s an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested.”

Walter may have a gigantic coaching gig, but his obligations extend farther. Additionally, he will spearhead New Zealand’s bid to have cricket make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. His appointment is of great significance now, if it wasn’t before. He has one the team preparing for NATS, AACTFest, and other national level competitions.
