The Jacksonville Jaguars are all set for an action-packed season! Head coach Liam Coen is installing an attack that is already sounding like Sean McVay’s fancy orchestra. After four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, working alongside McVay with Coen, he’s established those talents. He now adds a deeper bag of knowledge and strategic ingenuity to the Jaguars’ playbook. The Jaguars’ offense is adding important new pieces and reworking its game plan. To do that, they need to maximize the effectiveness of second-year QB Trevor Lawrence.
Coen’s history with McVay’s high-flying offensive attack should make for a very easy transition for the Jaguars. His experience with the Rams has armed him with a vivid understanding of the deeper workings and complexities of the game. Now he’s looking to leverage that experience to completely revamp the Jaguars’ offense. It’s obvious that the new offensive coordinator wants to give Lawrence the keys to the offense. His focus will be on making each aspect of their strategic approach first-rate.
"We've got to build it around him as well. We've got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be part of that process," said Coen at the NFL combine.
Offseason acquisitions have made the Jaguars even more formidable on paper. Center Robert Hainsey played the last four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Today, he is looking to make a decisive impact on Lawrence’s future. Hainsey’s experience working with Coen as his offensive coordinator in 2024 only makes him an invaluable asset to have on the roster. His ability to make line calls and block adjustments will be critical. This support will provide Lawrence with the knowledge and expertise to feel confident moving forward with this new system.
The Jaguars’ offensive dynamics would be going from mostly ho-hum to electric with the addition of receiver Dyami Brown. They added TE depth by bringing in Johnny Mundt and Hunter Long as well. These additions should help Lawrence’s game-breaking options and give him a more extensive receiving corps to work with.
The second-year player has already demonstrated exceptional talent, finishing third in the NFL with 1,282 receiving yards and setting franchise rookie records for both receiving yards and catches. He also set the rookie record with 10 touchdown catches — he tied it anyway, with Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe. After all, this gaudy production has created unreasonable expectations for how he can even further a franchise-altering impact on the team’s success.
"Really excited about his ascension in year two and I think he'll have a part in the offense moving forward in a way that we haven't seen yet," expressed GM James Gladstone.
The Jaguars’ offense will benefit from the redundancy created by tight end Brenton Strange and receiver Parker Washington stepping up. Both players are poised to assume bigger roles, raising the club’s collective floor. The most important position on the offense last year. Editors’ Note Though Engram missed eight games, largely with hamstring and shoulder injuries, he still caught 29 of his 40 catches in 2024.
Secondly, Lawrence’s safety blanket chemistry with their TEs Kirk and Engram has been a foundation to all of his success since 2022. When looking to these players, Lawrence did complete 70.2% of his passes, totaling 21 TD passes to go along with 10 INTs. His ability to quickly release the ball, averaging just 2.42 seconds, showcases his growing proficiency in reading defenses and executing plays efficiently.
Coen’s confidence in Lawrence’s capabilities shows in the fact that he’s planning on building the passing game around Lawrence.
"Our pass game will run through him, and [I'm] super excited to get to work with him," Coen stated.
The thrill over Lawrence’s promise is electric in the organization. His outstanding finish to last season definitely made waves with the coaching staff and front office.
"The way that he closed out last season was nothing short of impressive…" remarked GM James Gladstone.
As they prepare for the 2023 season, they truly believe that Lawrence still hasn’t unlocked his ceiling. Excitement runs high as everyone eagerly awaits what he’s going to do next.
"I don't think we've seen the best of Trevor," added Gladstone.
