Liam Coen, the newly appointed head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, is setting ambitious goals for his team. Previously serving as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen has now taken the helm of the Jaguars after a comprehensive hiring process led by owner Shad Khan. Despite being offered a significant raise to stay with the Buccaneers, Coen chose to embrace this new challenge with the Jaguars. His vision for the team focuses on speed, fundamental skills, an aggressive mindset, and mental and physical toughness.
In 2024, the Jaguars struggled with a lack of identity, vocal leadership, and on-field discipline, finishing 31st in total defense and 25th in point differential. Coen aims to address these issues by fostering a culture he describes as "savages" in their identity. He has already begun assembling his coaching staff and has retained special teams coordinator Heath Farwell on a three-year contract extension. Coen will personally oversee play-calling duties for the team.
"I want them playing on the edge. It's a violent game. They have to be that way. I want them to play that way." – Liam Coen
Coen believes that the Jaguars are not far from playoff contention, drawing parallels with their performances in 2022 and 2023. His experience with successful organizations like the Los Angeles Rams has shaped his understanding of what it takes to win football games. Known for producing Pro Bowl talents such as returner Jamal Agnew, punter Logan Cooke, and long-snapper Ross Matiscik, Coen is optimistic about the potential within the Jaguars' roster.
In his initial interactions with key players, including quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Josh Hines-Allen, Coen has identified areas for improvement and communicated his expectations clearly.
"I heard guys that are yearning for more," – Liam Coen
"Just more culture, more unity, more communication, just everybody being on the same page, a true aligned vision, and for everybody to be able to tell each other some hard truths in ways and see each other's blind spots and communicate those." – Liam Coen
The new coach emphasizes the importance of responsibility across both offense and defense, paired with a transparent and trust-based coaching approach.
"They want more responsibility on both sides of the balls, but with a clear vision. They want to be able to be coached hard but understand that it's coming from the right place and there's a trust and an honesty there." – Liam Coen
Coen’s strategy includes enhancing situational football prowess and ensuring that players are mentally and physically prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. His decisive leadership style is evident in his swift actions to compile his coaching staff and his clear communication of goals and expectations.
