Brian Schottenheimer, the newly appointed head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, has been making waves in his first 34 days at the helm. With a rich blend of experience and new talent, Schottenheimer aims to revitalize the Cowboys' coaching staff. His team includes Matt Eberflus as the defensive coordinator, a former head coach, alongside younger coordinators like Klayton Adams and Nick Sorensen, as well as coaches from the college football ranks. Currently stationed in Indianapolis since Sunday for the NFL scouting combine, Schottenheimer is committed to dedicating long hours to ensure success for the Cowboys.
Unlike most teams that only send coaches to the scouting combine for a few days, Schottenheimer has fully immersed himself in the process. He uses this time to meticulously evaluate schemes, personnel, free agent targets, and potential draft picks. Working tirelessly out of The Star, the Cowboys' headquarters, he often finds himself waking up in the middle of the night to jot down ideas and tasks that come to mind.
Schottenheimer's extensive experience in the NFL, having attended numerous scouting combines, gives him an edge in preparing for this critical event. Previously serving as the offensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy in 2023, Schottenheimer holds McCarthy in high regard and plans to build upon his predecessor's legacy while adding his personal touch.
"Mike's an incredible coach, [but] I'll put my fingerprint on it for sure," – Brian Schottenheimer
Schottenheimer's admiration for McCarthy is evident, and he expresses deep respect for the former coach's contributions to the team.
"Mike and Jerry [Jones] had a lot of hard conversations, and it ended up not working out, but I will never talk about Mike McCarthy in any way but hold him in the highest regard. He's one of my best friends in football, an amazing coach, an amazing mentor to me. And he'll be back on the sidelines before too long." – Brian Schottenheimer
Schottenheimer's readiness and enthusiasm for his new role resonate through his actions and words. He acknowledges that he feels more prepared now than ever before.
"I'm ready for it, more ready for it now than I was probably when I was 32 and had some opportunities," – Brian Schottenheimer
In assembling his coaching staff, Schottenheimer prioritizes finding individuals who are not only skilled educators but also outstanding people.
"I think we found great teachers. We found guys that were incredible people," – Brian Schottenheimer
Reflecting on past experiences, he emphasizes the importance of hands-on involvement during key events like the scouting combine.
"I think we learned a couple years ago with Mike, when I took over as the [offensive] coordinator, that when you stay back and some guys go, things get lost," – Brian Schottenheimer
Beyond his strategic acumen, Schottenheimer exudes a positive attitude and excitement about collaborating with his new team. His passion for football is palpable, and he strives to instill that same enthusiasm within his players. His approachable nature shines through as he takes time to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans, further endearing himself to the Cowboys' loyal supporters.
