In August, Melissa Andreatta was announced as the new head coach of Scotland Women’s National Team. The exciting and promising new direction being taken by the team’s leadership was made clear with this appointment. She replaces Pedro Martinez Losa. He would be sacked in December after failing to guide the team to Euro 2025 qualification. This move is especially timely as Scotland looks to regain its standing as a global leader.
Andreatta, now the assistant coach for Australia’s Matildas, has sage experience in the world of women’s football. She played a crucial role in supporting head coach Tony Gustavsson during the Matildas’ notable fourth-place finish at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, she was instrumental in the operational support for last year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
It will mean a lot to Scotland Women, who last reached a major tournament in 2019. Led by former coach Shelley Kerr, that year they qualified to play in the World Cup hosted in France. Andreatta’s appointment is anticipated to lead the team into a new era, with hopes of achieving better results in upcoming competitions.
Ian Maxwell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association, stated his belief in Andreatta’s potential to adapt to the new role. Lastly, he thanked Michael McArdle for the professionalism and integrity he demonstrated during the whole selection process. The head coach search drew interest from highly qualified candidates on three continents. This further exemplifies the worldwide passion in being at the helm of the Scotland Women’s National Team.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be leading Scotland Women’s National Team into a new, exciting era.” – Melissa Andreatta
Andreatta’s experience spans various roles within Australia’s women’s football, where she has been recognized as a valued member of the Matildas’ coaching staff. Simply put, she excelled at coaching and developing elite youth players. Her work happens within one of the most highly regarded performance systems. Her varied experience from the highest levels of women’s football is perfectly placed to create a positive impact in Scotland.
Their new head coach is clearly prepared to assume command. She’ll take her team into their Nations League match against Austria, at the end of May. Andreatta takes on this critical role with an ambitious agenda. She wants to be a motivator and raise the tide for the Scotland Women’s National Team.
Maxwell expressed hope about Andreatta’s leadership, adding that both players and staff are excited to have her on board.
“I am sure I speak on behalf of the players when I say we are all looking forward to Melissa starting her new role. I also reiterate my thanks to Michael, who will have a pivotal part to play in helping Melissa and the women’s national teams succeed in the future.” – Ian Maxwell
