Gary Neville expressed his frustration with Chelsea's performance in their recent clash against Manchester City, citing a missed opportunity that could potentially impact their chances of securing a Champions League spot next season. The match, held at the Etihad Stadium, saw Chelsea initially take a promising lead in the third minute through Noni Madueke. However, as the game progressed, Neville noted several shortcomings in Chelsea's approach, particularly in the second half.
Chelsea's early lead was nearly doubled when Cole Palmer made a mistimed pass that could have resulted in another goal. Despite this promising start, Neville was disappointed with Chelsea's inability to capitalize on their momentum. He had anticipated a strong response from Chelsea after what he assumed was a stern half-time talk from Enzo Maresca.
"I was expecting Chelsea to come out fast in the second half because I was expecting [Enzo] Maresca at half-time to have a right go at them for letting City back in the game. I didn't see the response" – Gary Neville
In the second half, Chelsea registered just one shot on target, and their expected goals (xG) dropped to 0.18 from 1.62 in the first half. Neville pointed out that this drop in performance was concerning, especially given the high stakes of the match. He was particularly critical of Chelsea's big-money midfielders, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, who he felt did not deliver the level of play required against a formidable opponent like City.
Adding to his frustration, Neville highlighted an incident involving Cole Palmer and City's manager, Pep Guardiola. After the match, Palmer engaged in a conversation with Guardiola on the pitch. Neville viewed this as inappropriate, given Chelsea's 3-1 defeat.
"I know he's had him but he didn't play him and he sold him so he should have ignored him and headed straight back to the dressing room. Have a conversation inside the dressing room, I'm not against that – obviously he's played for the manager but I just felt at the end that there's something about it I didn't feel was right from a Cole Palmer perspective" – Gary Neville
Neville emphasized that such interactions should be reserved for more private settings, especially after a loss of this magnitude. He believed that Palmer's decision to engage with Guardiola publicly sent the wrong message and failed to reflect the urgency needed from Chelsea's players.
Neville expressed his concern that Chelsea's lackluster performance could jeopardize their ambitions for a Champions League berth next season. He expected more from the team, particularly from players like Palmer, who should have been motivated to showcase their skills against one of Europe's elite clubs.
"I was expecting Chelsea to come out fast in the second half because I was expecting Enzo Maresca at half-time to have a right go at them. I'm not a Chelsea fan but I'm a football fan and I would be deflated with my team" – Gary Neville
The defeat not only denied Chelsea an opportunity to make a statement against Manchester City but also highlighted areas that require immediate improvement if they are to compete at the highest level.
