The Brooklyn Nets announced that 24-year-old guard Cam Thomas will miss at least three to four weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained during their recent game against the Indiana Pacers. This pisser of a downturn occurred during Q1’s first month. Even so, it resulted in the Nets’ first win of the season.
Thomas agreed to a one-year, $6 million qualifying offer this summer. He has unsurprisingly, given his pedigree and stature on the field quickly become a key cog for the team. He’s put on a breathtaking show in the process, averaging 21.4 points per game. This ranks him second on the team, only behind Michael Porter Jr. His detonation on offense has underscored just how important he’s been to the Nets’ success thus far. They’re hoping to create some positive momentum during the busy early season stretch.
The whole disaster came right when the Nets were finally starting to hit their stride and enjoy success and surprise their way to the playoffs. The victory over the Pacers proved to be an important inflection point for the team. It highlighted the best of Thomas’s skillful contributions to the game prior to his injury. His scoring ability and playmaking on both ends of the court has been essential to the Nets’ success this season. They’ll unequivocally miss his presence on—not just in—court.
With Thomas headed for free agency this offseason, how he came out of the first stretch of the season has been crucial. The extended time off could impact his standing in negotiations and overall market value as he prepares to become an unrestricted free agent. The Nets will have to tread very softly on this situation as they plan their long-term roster future and possible moves to make.
