One of football’s biggest stars, the celebrated defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, just dropped a huge bombshell. At 38 years old, he’s retiring from his Hall of Fame-caliber NFL career. Suh’s successful career spanned more than 10 years. He left an indelible legacy on the gridiron as a player with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles. He is survived by a long legacy of powerful performances and many honors.
Suh first made waves in the NFL when the Detroit Lions selected him second overall in the 2010 draft. The impression he left was quick, but indelible. His rookie season was spectacular. He did realize both All-Pro honors and the AP Rookie of the Year award by logging a career-high ten sacks. In Suh’s remarkable, 199-game career he has notched only 600 tackles. He bookended this with 71.5 sacks, confirming his dominance and outlandish talent at the position.
Suh not only has high sack totals, but he puts up great defensive numbers. He’s forced one interception, forced five fumbles and he’s recovered nine fumbles, three of which he’s returned for touchdowns. His sheer talent to cause havoc on any down made him a terrifying force in the NFL. As a member of the Detroit Lions, Suh was named to the Hall of Fame All-2010s team. This most recent recognition cements his standing among the all time greats of the game.
Suh ended his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl there in 2020. This victory cemented his legacy as the boardroom’s clutch player during game time. Before his incredible 84-game stretch of starts, career-wise he only missed eight starts, showing true tenacity and talent over time.
His decision was affected by personal circumstances. The recent death of his father on July 12, 2024, affected him deeply. Suh has called that day “the most difficult day of my life,” a testament to the emotional impact it had on him.
“I left it all on the field, and now I’m stepping away with peace and gratitude.” – Ndamukong Suh
Suh says that his father was the biggest influence on him, steering him from a young age. He recalled his father’s words during their conversations about retirement:
