The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) are progressing toward establishing a new basketball league in Europe. This creation became one of the most controversial issues at that two-day Board of Governors meeting which wrapped up on Thursday. As NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed, that would be very good news! The league is excited to move forward after a long and deliberate process to identify a successful model for both teams.
NBA owners have given “enthusiastic support” to the venture, emphasizing the league’s ongoing effort to develop its international brand. After months of discussions between the NBA and FIBA, they’ve mutually agreed to test out this thrilling new concept. They’ve been flirting with an annual Europe-based competition or perhaps establishing a separate, NBA-run league on the continent.
FIBA’s decision-making body has unanimously underscored that the time is right for such a partnership. Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, emphasized this sentiment by stating:
“Coming out of the most successful World Cup and Olympics ever, we also believe it is the right time to take the next step for club basketball.” – Andreas Zagklis
The NBA took advantage of a recent visit to France to engage with European counterparts. They concentrated on talking about how to improve the game of basketball in Europe. The relocation highlights the league’s long-term strategy to expand the league’s reach throughout the region. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said yesterday that the league is still “on course” in its long-game efforts to reach new audiences.
The potential for a new European league was discussed during a previous Board of Governors meeting in September, where Andreas Zagklis participated. Their next full board meeting in March will be an opportunity to help acclimate the league’s new governors to progress on this emerging move.
Commissioner Silver remarked:
“The response we’ve gotten from the marketplace is very positive.” – Adam Silver
