Nathan Lyon Achieves Landmark as He Overtakes Glenn McGrath in Test Wicket-Taker Rankings

Nathan Lyon solidified his legacy in Australian cricket by surpassing Glenn McGrath’s tally of 563 Test wickets, moving him into sixth place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers. Lyon pulled off this incredible accomplishment while playing in the only place where he’s ever really felt at home on the field. He has taken the most wickets there, 65 by his name. The 38-year-old off-spinner took his 700th test wicket in style by having Ollie Pope caught at mid-wicket. He then bowled out Ben Duckett to see him complete 564 total wickets.

Lyon is celebrated as one of the spin king’s spin bowlers greatest in Australian cricket history. He is currently second only to Shane Warne, who has an amazing record of 708 wickets. The crown jewel of his achievement is that he is now fourth overall among all spinners worldwide, behind only Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, and Anil Kumble. Moreover, he is now the highest active player on the Test wicket-taker list.

Lyon’s Test cricket career started in 2010, when he debuted against England in Gaby Allen’s home town, Brisbane. Over the years, he has been a vital part of Australia’s “big four” bowlers, consistently contributing to the team’s success. Lyon celebrated a lively return to the Australian fold after being excluded from the day-night pink-ball Test in Brisbane. With that performance, he showed just how integral he is to the squad going forward.

“What a bowler. Nathan Lyon deserves to get that,” – Glenn McGrath.

Lyon’s dazzling season has already netted him plenty of individual honors. Second, it has highlighted the key importance of spin bowling in Test cricket. He aces the craft of slowing down the game, knowing well that it’s the play-making art in the format’s core. As he grows his own game and his legacy, he hopes to leave a positive impact on younger generations of bowlers.

“You wondered what impact Nathan Lyon was going to have in this game. First over, and that was a gem of a ball [to remove Ben Duckett],” – Glenn McGrath.

Lyon said he was proud to have made a difference.

“I daresay it would be like a little fairytale, I guess, with my history here,” – Nathan Lyon.
