And if you haven’t heard, Nat Sciver-Brunt is officially the captain of the England women’s cricket team! She succeeds Heather Knight, who captained the team for nine immensely successful years. At only 32 years of age, Sciver-Brunt is very much accepting this position of leadership. She assumes control at a pivotal time for the team, not least with the 50-over World Cup in India already nines in September.
As an impressive and experienced all-rounder, Sciver-Brunt has thoroughly cemented herself as one of the most important players for England. She has captained the team in 11 T20I matches and once in a ODI. Her leadership has been phenomenal, and her presence alone has won us nine games in those close games. Her vast experience vice-captain will undoubtedly hold her in good stead, as she takes on this new challenge.
Sciver-Brunt said she was delighted to be taking the role, adding she had served on the team for many years. “Ever since I made my England debut back in 2013, all I have wanted to do is help the team in every way that I can. I will try my best to lead this team to success, while empowering them to be the best version of themselves,” she said.
The decision to bring in Sciver-Brunt is made all the more interesting with Knight’s future with the side previously thrown into question. Sciver-Brunt had spoken about being prepared to step up and lead the charge if needed. This highlights her perseverance and sincere passion to drive the team through transitional stages.
Sciver-Brunt’s leadership skills are the stuff of legend. She is a highly accomplished cricketer, being named by England as one of their leading 4 openers and England’s most experienced bowler. She has played a crucial role in the team’s recent successes, including her participation in the Women’s Premier League where she helped the Mumbai Indians secure their second title last month.
The captaincy change follows a difficult period for Sciver-Brunt. In 2022, she stepped away from cricket to focus on her mental health. On the field, she is an undisputed leader, a commanding voice in the middle of the pitch whose energy and passion inspires teammates. Most recently, she welcomed her first child, a boy named Theodore. This new chapter only continues to her story as a budding captain and career professional athlete.
Sciver-Brunt’s first marquee challenge will be the World Cup taking place in India. Her goal is to use that experience and leadership ability to help lead her teammates through this difficult and prestigious tournament.
“I’m really proud to take on the role of captain and it’s an honour to have been asked by Charlotte, someone I’ve always looked up to,” she remarked, highlighting her respect for former captain Knight and the support system within the team.
