Morocco Maintains Winning Streak with AFCON Opening Victory

Morocco opened the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 host tournament with a comprehensive opening win. They beat Comoros 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match, hosted in Rabat. With this victory, Morocco stretched its world-record haul of consecutive victories to an astonishing 19. That incredible streak dates all the way back to March 2024.

Even better, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan made an appearance at the match, proudly supporting his national team. They wanted to prove their abilities on the biggest stage available our own soil. From the start, Morocco suffered a painful blow when the penalty of Soufiane Rahimi was saved by Comoros custodian, Yannick Pandor. Nevertheless, that didn’t deter the team, as they quickly adjusted and took command of the game.

Brahim Diaz made it 1-0 for Morocco just 10 minutes into the second half. It was Noussair Mazrouai’s picture-perfect assist, though. As expected, this provided a jolt of adrenaline to the home crowd as his goal hit twine. Riding the wave of momentum, Morocco was on the front foot and pushing for a second goal.

Ayoub El Kaabi provided the goal of the tournament thus far, an outrageous bicycle kick from 12 yards. He put the match beyond doubt just 16 minutes from the end. This superb goal wasn’t just an example of El Kaabi’s quality, it highlighted Morocco’s attacking threat for the whole game.

This victory continues to set a strong precedent for the AFCON 2025 tournament. This win was a testament to their quality and a further validation of their status as current football’s best team.
