Moehrig’s Suspension Confirmed as Panthers Face Rams Without Key Player

Tre’von Moehrig, a defensive back for the Carolina Panthers, has an ongoing suspension upheld. This decision follows up on a dangerous situation involving San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings. In Monday Night’s game, Moehrig gave Jennings a pretty egregious low blow. It was a public fracas that resulted in an NFL investigation and discipline. That likely means safety Trevon Moehrig will be unavailable for the Raiders’ game against the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.

The contentious moment transpired at 0:26 in the fourth quarter of the matchup between the Panthers and the 49ers, which concluded with a 20-9 victory for San Francisco. As tensions continued to boil over on that sideline, Moehrig ended up hitting Jennings with an uppercut to the stomach. Today, league officials would consider that move out of bounds. His suspension, which was implemented as a punishment for this action, was rescinded. This point was confirmed by Derrick Brooks, one of the three independent hearing officers appointed by the NFL & NFL Players Association.

Moehrig’s absence feels especially painful for the Panthers. They sit at 6-6 and in the thick of the competitive NFC South, a half game back from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team is just getting ready to play their biggest NFC West competitor in the Rams. Still, they will need to surmount this hurdle without one of their MVPs.

Partly complicating the situation for Moehrig is a nagging ankle sprain that he’s been battling this season. Despite this setback, he will be eligible to return to the Panthers’ active roster next Monday, following the team’s game against the Rams.

In a surprising twist, Jennings came back on the offensive post-game. He took Moehrig out of the play with a horizontal, open-handed right cross to his facemask. Most critical to underscore, perhaps, is the fact that Jennings has never been disciplined by the NFL. There have been no consequences for his actions in this incident.

Though the Panthers will have time to prepare before their next game, they should formulate plans to deal with Moehrig’s absence. The suspension and ongoing injury issues highlight the challenges that teams face as they navigate through tough competition within the league.
