Moeen Ali, the former England all-rounder, has announced his decision to bow out of county cricket this summer. At 37, Moeen will not feature for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, choosing instead to focus on the T20 Blast with the Birmingham Bears. He returned to Edgbaston in 2022 on a three-year white-ball deal but plans to transition into a player-coach role after his contract with Warwickshire expires in July.
In his last summer at Edgbaston, Moeen left an indelible mark by scoring 205 runs in six T20 appearances. His standout performance included a breathtaking innings of 103 off 59 balls against Leicestershire. Alongside his batting prowess, he also took five wickets in the tournament, showcasing his all-round capabilities.
Moeen's decision to retire from county cricket follows the conclusion of his international career last year. During his tenure with England, he amassed impressive records across formats, playing 68 Tests, 138 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 92 T20 internationals. A Birmingham native, Moeen began his cricket journey with the Bears before moving to Worcestershire, where he captained the team to victory in the T20 Blast trophy in 2018.
Reflecting on his decision to step away from the game, Moeen stated:
"This is a big decision for me and not one I've taken lightly." – Moeen Ali
He expressed a desire to remain connected to the sport and transition smoothly into coaching:
"I still have passion for the game and I love being in a team environment. I also enjoy talking to players about cricket, the tactics, and I think that will help me move smoothly into coaching after my playing days are over." – Moeen Ali
Moeen's contributions to cricket have not gone unnoticed. Stuart Cain praised him as a local hero and a source of inspiration for young cricketers:
"Moeen is an icon of cricket and a local hero who has inspired children from all walks of life across our region to pick up a bat and ball." – Stuart Cain
Looking ahead, Moeen remains enthusiastic about his involvement with the Birmingham Bears:
"I'll be available to play throughout the Blast group games, and would love to be involved as a player-coach." – Moeen Ali
