Recent finalist Miranda Wang exhibited tremendous poise and talent at the FM Championship. She capped off the day at TPC Boston with a three-shot lead for the second consecutive day. The LPGA rookie showcased her exceptional skills by shooting a remarkable 7-under 65, bringing her total score to 18-under 198. Wang’s play has become must-watch tuning as she tries to continue her historic run of success on the LPGA Tour in 2023.
Wang’s trek to the front wasn’t without drama. Entering the final round three shots back, she showed incredible resolve and firepower, especially with her putting arsenal. She cripped on a bogey on the par-5 second hole, then failed to recover from a double bogey on the par-3 third hole. She had a great recuperation time after that. Returning to the course on Tuesday morning she recorded her first birdie of the day on the sixth hole. That landmark moment launched her forward into the lead for the first time in the competition.
Her putting was the strongest part of her round for the 23-year-old golfer. She played the rain-softened course with precision and control, recording just 24 putts in her round. Wang’s confidence only grew when she made a memorable 40-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole. She finished her bogey-free round with an excellent 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th. That was a notable run of 27 in a row without a drop.
“This is where all the players want to be, so it’s definitely special going into the final round being the sole leader,” Wang expressed after her round. So her ability to perform at a high level has come down to her focus and commitment over the course of the tournament.
Even after some unfortunate mishaps in the middle of her round, Wang’s talent to reset and perform in high-stress moments has been impressive. She reflected on her hot back nine during the first round, stating, “Ever since I had really hot back nine on first round my putting has been clicking. I was getting speed and line really well and I made super long putts on No. 7 today, and that gave me even more confidence.”
As Wang approaches the final round, her mission is to keep doing what she’s been doing. That’s sort of the goal that we aim for every week, so I’m just thrilled that I was able to do my job extremely well. I’d like to keep repeating what I was able to do today,” she added, referencing the strength that helped her earn the national championship title.
With her hot play at TPC Boston, Wang has established herself as an emerging LPGA star to watch. It creates a thrilling backdrop to the last day of competition. She now has a three-shot lead. This time, she’ll use that momentum to run down her first career victory as a rookie.
