Mike McCarthy, who guided the Green Bay Packers to nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory during his tenure from 2006 to 2018, will not return as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. McCarthy, hired by the Cowboys in 2020, had a contract with the team that expired on December 27, 2024. Despite having an exclusive window to negotiate a new deal until December 28, the Cowboys have opted not to extend his contract.
During his five-season stint as the Cowboys’ head coach, McCarthy compiled a 49-35 record, but managed to secure only one playoff victory. The Cowboys suffered notable home losses in the wild-card round to teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and McCarthy's former team, the Green Bay Packers. The decision not to renew his contract follows a disappointing 2024 season where the Cowboys finished with a 7-10 record.
In his final year with the Cowboys, McCarthy's team struggled defensively, allowing an average of 27.5 points per game, ranking them 31st in the NFL. Additionally, the Cowboys made history by becoming the first team in the league to trail by at least 20 points in six consecutive home games, ultimately finishing with a 2-7 home record for the season.
"Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover," – Jerry Jones
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, emphasized that thorough discussions took place regarding the team's future and McCarthy’s potential role within it. Despite these discussions, both parties agreed to part ways at the end of McCarthy's contract.
McCarthy's departure comes amid speculation of his potential interest in other coaching opportunities. Reports indicate that he is expected to interview for the Chicago Bears head-coaching position. This prospect signifies a possible new chapter for McCarthy as he looks to leverage his extensive experience and success with the Packers into another NFL head coaching role.
McCarthy’s tenure with the Packers saw him achieve significant success, including winning Super Bowl XLV in the 2010 season. His ability to consistently guide his teams to playoff appearances established him as a respected figure in NFL coaching circles. However, his time with the Cowboys was markedly less successful in terms of postseason achievements.
The Cowboys' decision not to retain McCarthy underscores their desire for a fresh direction following several seasons of unmet expectations. The team’s challenges on defense, coupled with their inability to perform consistently at home, highlighted a need for change. As they move forward, identifying a coach capable of elevating their performance will be paramount.
