In a thrilling encounter at the first leg of the Women's Champions League quarter-final, Manchester City handed Sonia Bompastor her first defeat as Chelsea boss. The match ended in a 2-0 triumph for Manchester City, thanks to a stunning performance by Vivianne Miedema, who scored both goals. The victory gave Manchester City a crucial advantage in the tie, while Chelsea’s remarkable 31-game unbeaten streak came to an unexpected halt.
The match was a highly anticipated clash, with Manchester City and Chelsea set to meet four times in the space of 12 days. Despite the absence of key players Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Aoba Fujino due to injuries, Manchester City delivered a memorable Champions League night performance, leaving Chelsea with the challenge of overturning a two-goal deficit in the second leg.
Tactical Masterstroke by Cushing
Manchester City manager Nick Cushing made a significant tactical decision by starting Vivianne Miedema on the bench. Miedema was introduced at half-time, and her impact was immediate and decisive.
"Viv starting on the bench tonight and coming off it is a bit of a gamble. But I knew Viv would be able to come for 45 and be a huge presence in the game, and you can see that with the result," said Nick Cushing.
Miedema's presence changed the dynamics of the game, and she quickly found the back of the net twice, ensuring City took control of the tie.
"I was confident if she got chances she'd score, she is a top-level finisher. She's frustrated because she thinks she should have had a hat-trick!" added Nick Cushing.
Chelsea's Unbeaten Run Ends
Chelsea entered the match with an impressive 31-game unbeaten record. However, they were unable to maintain their streak as Manchester City capitalized on their opportunities. Chelsea's aspirations of securing their first Champions League trophy faced a setback, but they remain hopeful with the second leg still to come.
The defeat marked Sonia Bompastor's first as Chelsea manager, presenting her with an early test in her tenure.
Upcoming Rematch at Stamford Bridge
The teams are set to meet again on March 27 at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of this quarter-final clash. Chelsea will be eager to overturn their deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive. Additionally, both clubs will also face off in the Women's Super League (WSL) on Sunday, adding more intensity to their already heated rivalry.
Despite the setback, Vivianne Miedema expressed her satisfaction with her performance and emphasized the importance of such Champions League nights.
"I do feel well, but I am not at the stage where I can go four times 90 minutes. I am really happy I came on second half and could help the team," Miedema stated.
"This should be our standard. We were really disappointed after Saturday [the League Cup final]. We've had some special Champions League nights here and this one really sums it all up!" she further added.
