Middlesex Takes Control After Strong Bowling and Batting Displays Against Northamptonshire

Middlesex took a strong hold on their game with Northamptonshire having made light work of low totals posted by the hosts across both their innings. In contrast, their first innings was a massive 413. Now, on only their second innings, they are 215 for 3 (Northamptonshire still trailing by 193 with 7 wickets in hand). Brewery Yard’s success was marked by a dominating show from bowlers and batsmen alike.

Nine days ago, in Northamptonshire’s first innings, they racked up a remarkable 435 runs. Saif Zaib notably led the charge with a blistering century. He was well supported by Lewis McManus, with 71 runs and Justin Broad, 70 runs. This concerted batting effort helped Northamptonshire post a daunting scoreboard for their Middlesex joiners.

Zafar Gohar was the pick of the bowlers for Middlesex, finishing with five for 121. His bowling, as well as Bramble’s, was the key in keeping Northamptonshire to an under-par first innings total. Ryan Higgins had an equally telling contribution with the ball, taking three wickets for a mere 48 runs. He turned that goodwill into magic, netting a sensational hat trick in the morning session.

When it came time for Middlesex’s second innings, Josh de Caires had his mark to make. He put forth an exceptional showing, finishing with 87 runs—the most he’s ever scored in a first-class cricket match. He and Sam Robson worked well together to set the tone for the innings, their opening partnership of 89 runs laying the foundations. Robson contributed 48 runs before being dismissed.

While Middlesex’s batting continued to impress, Calvin Harrison caught the eye with his bowling ability. He went on to bowl exceedingly tight, conceding just a single four in his first five-over spell. It was this control that put the Northamptonshire batsmen under constant pressure.

As the day wore on, the Middlesex batting order kept extending their advantage. De Caires’ innings featured a mixture of aggressive strokes and careful placements, showcasing his potential as a future star for the team. While at the other end Holden was untroubled on 35*, beginning the process of patiently steering the innings towards a huge total.

Northamptonshire really showed incredible strength in adversity. They’d go on to set a World Cup record for their 10th wicket partnership, which was capped off by Lloyd Pope and Justin Broad. This important 9th wicket partnership (55 runs) proved vital to their first innings total. That wasn’t enough to get across the threshold score they would need to get a large enough lead over Middlesex.

With Middlesex firmly in control of the match, they have the favourable advantage as they try to close out a victory. And their bowlers have already proven their effectiveness. Provided for by their hard hitting and steady fielding batting order, they will look to build on their early lead over the next few days.
