They now trail the playoffs by 22 points and are looking for their third manager in under three months. Wimmer was appointed at Fir Park in February. Now, he has come full circle, back in Germany to take the reins of third division side SSV Jahn Regensburg.
In his brief spell at Motherwell, Wimmer oversaw just five wins. He faced pushback that he described as an “ongoing, extremely difficult” situation. He took over from Stuart Kettlewell and thanked the board for their backing during his time at the club. In the end, his family took precedence over everything and that was the reason for his departure.
In a statement, Wimmer shared his feelings about the transition, saying, “This decision was an extremely hard one for me to make. I have decided to move back home, as I need to put my family first and be with them.” He acknowledged the support from the board and staff, stating, “They have done everything to support me and my family during my time here.”
While Wimmer’s time at Motherwell was punctuated by proud moments, those times were marred by struggles on and off the pitch. He added that the club went above and beyond to help him through these challenging times. As he takes on this new challenge at SSV Jahn Regensburg, he will be looking with optimism towards the direction in which Motherwell are heading.
As a fan, I wish my beloved club a better happy next time. It was a treat indeed to finally spend some quality time in Scotland. During his announcement, Wimmer lauded the club’s active members, noting their impressive ambition. He feels that they really do want what’s best for the long term success of the club.
Motherwell had started the search for Wimmer’s successor even before the Dutchman left. The club’s management is under pressure to find a suitable candidate who can lead them effectively as they prepare for the upcoming season.
