Cartier Michaels Michael Carter-Williams, the 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year, has made a switch to the pugilistic arts at the age of 33. The 6-foot-5 point guard, who had a notable basketball career, announced his boxing debut will take place on May 29, 2025, at the Leman Ballroom in New York City. He’ll take on Sam Khativ in a three-round heavyweight showdown bout at the fight card dubbed the Broad Street Brawl.
Carter-Williams was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 11th pick of the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft. During his time in the league, he made headlines for his dominating stats on a regular basis. In the league, he averaged 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He quickly became a cornerstone for the 76ers franchise and won the league’s Rookie of the Year honors in 2014.
Playing his final NBA game in 2023, Carter-Williams officially retired in 2024. Over his career, he played for five teams: the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, and Orlando Magic. His career numbers of 10.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game might not jump off the page.
While the Broad Street Brawl will be a momentous personal accomplishment for Carter-Williams, it has a greater philanthropic impact in its mission. The event aims to raise funds for Bigvision Community, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young adults recovering from substance abuse. This program is a testament to Carter-Williams’ desire to use his platform to empower and uplift his community.
Carter-Williams expressed satisfaction with his career in a recent interview, stating, “I’m at peace with my career. I’ve had so many accomplishments, and I’ve lived a life bigger than I could have dreamed. I’ve met amazing people and am able to give back, which makes me proud. I’m thankful for everything. I don’t have no regrets. I really don’t.”
Boxing promoter Ronson Frank looks forward to this exciting new chapter. Reflecting on the importance of Carter-Williams’ debut, he said it best when he stated, “It really just hinges on how this one goes.”
With his transition from basketball to boxing, fans and supporters eagerly await to see how Carter-Williams will fare in the ring.
