Micah Parsons Situation Remains Uncertain as Cowboys Navigate Trade Talks

Micah Parsons, a star linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, continues to be a focal point of speculation surrounding his future with the team. The 26-year-old player participated in walk-throughs and team meetings in Oxnard, California, as well as upon returning to Frisco, Texas. After not wearing a jersey for the preseason finale on Thursday night against the Atlanta Falcons, this controversial decision sent shockwaves, voicing concerns and doubting his legitimacy.

As the game unfolded, Parsons lay on a medical table behind the Mavs’ bench. Simultaneously, the Cowboys’ offense raced down the field and responded. It came just a few days after an MRI last Friday that medically cleared him to practice. The Cowboys’ higher-ups have been adamant about his health thus far, but the cloud of his contract situation continues to hang over him.

When Parsons made that request official on August 1, he elicited a fiery response from team owner Jerry Jones. Time and again, Jones reiterated in crystal clear terms that the team would not consider any deal for Parsons. It sounds as if at least a few of those teams have come to the Cowboys trying to initiate trade conversations.

Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, has been actively involved in discussions about his client’s value and contract. According to sources close to the situation, Parsons’ camp contends that he deserves to be paid $24.007 million as a linebacker. This figure, on the other hand, is based on negotiations that should play out after the end of the current dance season.

Back in March, Jones reportedly felt certain that he and Parsons had worked out a deal. This deal would put Parsons as the non-QB with the most guaranteed cash in NFL history. At least from a partisan perspective, as we enter this pivotal season, it’s still anybody’s guess how this route will play out. The Cowboys only have one year left on Parsons’ current contract. If they can’t come to a satisfactory long-term deal after the season, they can use their franchise tag on him.

On Sunday, Parsons said he had a “fantastic discussion” with new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. For them to have resorted to realizing that potential on the battlefield, we simply must require redder lines—if not draws. The team’s management has indicated a strong desire to retain Parsons and recognize his immense talent and contribution on the field.

As the preseason comes to a close and the regular season approaches, all eyes remain on Parsons and his future with the Dallas Cowboys. The organization really shoots themselves in the foot with their punitive approach of doubling down on their decision to retain him. Between daily discussions and frequent trade inquiries from competing teams, the opportunity to shake things up never completely disappears.

That’s why Parsons’ fifth-year option is particularly important. It depends on how much time he spent at linebacker in his third year. Much like the situation with Zeke, the Cowboys will have to choose his role and usage as they attempt to move forward in these negotiations.
