Micah Parsons Joins Packers and Makes Strategic Fantasy Football Choices

Micah Parsons, the standout linebacker recently acquired by the Green Bay Packers, made headlines both on and off the field this week. The team traded two first-round draft picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark to secure Parsons, who showcased his skills in his debut against the Detroit Lions during Week 1. Even with the high profile, Parsons still went with the shocking decision to not draft himself in his fantasy football league. So many were especially aghast at his decision.

On August 28, the Packers made a huge trade to land Parsons, proving their dedication to ramping up their defense. Retired NFL player Jason McCourty called Parsons the best defensive player he’d ever seen. He called Parsons an ‘eraser’ for his incredible knack to eliminate threats. This reputation was put to the test in his first game with the Packers, where he contributed to the team’s defensive efforts against the Lions.

In Week 1, while Parsons was on the field, Edgerrin Cooper, a fellow linebacker for the Packers, led the team with an impressive 12 tackles. Cooper’s performance not only locked him as the new face of the team, but turned out to be a win for Parsons’ fantasy football league. Incredibly, Parsons did get the first overall pick in his fantasy draft, only for him to not take himself. Instead, he picked Cooper, who promptly dropped an astounding 36 points on Parsons’ fantasy team.

Parsons provided insight into his decision-making process. He was the flier for me this week,” he explained, sharing that “I watched practice, studied what we had gauged in, and made the call to start him.” McCoy went out and torched it with 36 points … wow! It’s like, ‘Ahh, so you knew something.’ And I was just like, ‘No, no, no, listen, we can’t do that. I just had a feeling.’

The move for Parsons reaffirmed the Packers’ intent to throw even more muscle in their front seven. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky immediately called the acquisition an “accelerant.” He emphasized that it could change the very identity of the team’s defense moving forward. As Parsons is getting acclimated to the Packers’ system, he deepens his learning as he attends and closely monitors team practices to gain helpful approach/planning tactics.

Despite his significant role on the field as a new member of the Packers, Parsons remains grounded in his fantasy football decisions. He expressed hesitancy regarding the trade of draft capital for himself, reflecting on the implications such decisions can have: “I couldn’t give up that type of draft capital.”
