Micah Parsons has officially traded to the Green Bay Packers after a huge trade from the Dallas Cowboys. On Friday, the roof fell in on that deal. To get Parsons, the Packers traded Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark along with two first-round draft picks. This trade represents a bold change of direction for both teams. The Packers win by finally getting a playmaker like Parsons, but the Cowboys are improving their future beyond 2021.
Parsons went on to sign a huge contract extension with the Packers shortly after being traded, ensuring his long-term future with the team. It’s being sold as the blockbuster deal to end all blockbuster deals, and there was tremendous excitement for the transaction itself among fans and analysts. Parsons continues to be an influential figure. Parsons was, and continues to be, an extremely important player in Packers history. Curly Lambeau was the last to have that distinction from 1925-1926.
During a 24-minute news conference, Parsons expressed his enthusiasm about the move and his optimism regarding his health. He got through treatment on his back and said with certainty to reporters that he doesn’t foresee anything holding him back in the future.
I just hope I can be able to add not just a little, but a lot,” Parsons said. I’m looking forward to collaborating with the physicians to develop a strategy. Previously, we wrote about how to do that quickly but the right way. Let’s establish a rhythm that works for you and for me.
Parsons, too, is thrilled to get back to work this new season. He is targeting the season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7, if all goes well.
Parsons was ecstatic to find himself with the Packers. He made no secret about his worries on his future with the Cowboys. He had personally been starting to fret that his issue wouldn’t be resolved before the regular season kicked off.
“I did not want to be in a position where I was missing opportunities, not only to feed my family, but like I said, the brotherhood,” he remarked, emphasizing his desire to contribute to his new team.
General manager Brian Gutekunst would have a hard time topping his bold move to acquire Parsons. He dealt two first round picks plus a Pro Bowl player to get him. This bold move underscores the Packers’ ambition to strengthen their roster as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
Parsons later shared on his Instagram stories that neither Jerry Jones nor Stephen Jones gave him a heads up about the trade before it went public. “They didn’t give up what they gave up for me to sit on the sidelines,” he said, reiterating his determination to play and contribute from day one.
Parsons, of course, is preparing himself for life in his new position. He’ll fly back to Dallas on Friday night and then re-fly Sunday to work even more up close and personal with then-BC defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Especially since Parsons will be heavily relied on as he fits into the team’s new defensive schemes.
Head coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the Packers organization, stating, “I feel like that’s always the expectation around here, I feel like since the day I was hired.” He highlighted the need to stay focused and work as a team all season long.
LaFleur added, “You just approach it no different than we have in the past. Trying to be your best each and every day, trying to get a little bit better. It’s a long year. There are a lot of variables that come into play throughout the course of the season.”
