Included in the trade agreement, the Miami Heat traded the Brooklyn Nets a second-round pick in 2032. In exchange, the Nets sent a conditional second-round pick in next year’s draft. This simple exchange of letters underscores just how strategic the deal really is. Both teams want to maximize future return on investment while taking care of their present day obligations.
Adding to that question is the recent news that Highsmith had surgery on a torn meniscus, throwing some doubt at his short-term readiness. Sources say he should return in eight to ten weeks. Just the right timing with him likely able to be ramped up in time to be ready for the beginning of the regular season. He is supposed to make around $5.6 million this year.
Moving Highsmith gives the Miami Heat an opportunity to address their salary cap struggles. This decision makes way for new acquisitions and more player development opportunities. The shift is a great example of their desire to be competitive, yet continue to operate within their means.
