Memphis Grizzlies Dismiss Taylor Jenkins After Successful Tenure

Taylor Jenkins has been fired by the Memphis Grizzlies, a surprise move by the controlling owner Robert Pera. The surprising decision, announced on Friday, follows Jenkins’ tenure with the team that began in the 2019-20 season. During his tenure, he led the Grizzlies to a record of 250-214, securing his place as the winningest coach in the franchise’s history earlier this season.

That was not what he expected to hear during a meeting Friday morning at the Grizzlies’ office, where Jenkins was informed of his departure. Under his leadership, three postseason appearances and one playoff series victory. This was a time of steady progress and achievement for the soccer team. It wasn’t just a championship court success — it was under his direction that so many of the players in Mike’s early classes developed into stars.

“I’m genuinely appreciative of Taylor’s contributions to this team and this city over the past six seasons.” – Zach Kleiman

Shortly after being appointed in 2019, Jenkins made a name for himself as a developer of talent and lead the Red Wolves to new successes. The Grizzlies’ performance spoke to his impact as every year under his stewardship they were a team moving in the right direction.

The decision to cut ties with Jenkins wasn’t taken lightly and very much speaks to the state of the franchise and its future trajectory. Though in a losing battle with the odds stacked against him, Jenkins’ effect on the Grizzlies’ long-term direction in recent years should not be understated.
